Climbing Above the Koalas: Wild Ropes Taronga Review 2026
For families with older kids (8+), the standard zoo walk can sometimes feel a bit "slow." Enter Wild Ropes. It’s an aerial adventure course built directly into the canopy of the zoo. We suited up to see if it’s worth the extra cash in 2026.
The Setup
Wild Ropes isn't just a zip line. It's a series of four courses ranging from "I'm a bit nervous" to "Why did I do this?" You are harnessed in with a state-of-the-art continuous belay system, which in 2026 is faster and safer than ever. The thrill of navigating a suspension bridge while an emu watches you from 20 feet below is truly unique to Taronga.
Is it too scary for kids?
There are dedicated children's courses for those as young as 3 years old. However, the real meat of the experience is for those over 140cm. The "Advanced" course involves some genuine core strength and a bit of a stomach for heights. Our 12-year-old reviewer described it as "better than any video game," which is high praise in this day and age.
Expect to spend about 90 minutes here. If you book a morning slot, you can finish just in time for the 11 AM Seal Show. It’s a perfect way to burn off some of that pre-teen energy before the more educational parts of the day. The views of the harbor from the top of the ropes course are actually better than the Sky Safari because you're stationary and can really soak it in.
The Cost Factor
At roughly $40 AUD per person (on top of zoo entry), it’s not cheap. If you are a family of four, that's another $160. Our recommendation? Only do it if your kids are genuinely into physical activity. If they are scared of heights, it’s a waste of money. But for the adventurous family, it’s the best "add-on" in the park.
Top Tip
Wear closed-toe shoes! They will not let you climb in flip-flops (thongs) or sandals. We saw three families turned away because they only had beach shoes. Don't be that family!
