Sydney is now a two-zoo town. For decades, Taronga was the only game in the city, but the rise of the new Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney has changed the game for families. Which one is actually better for kids? We break down the alternatives.

The Topography Battle: Flat vs Hill

If you have a pram, three kids, and a bad back, Sydney Zoo (Western Sydney) is your savior. It is 100% flat. You can walk the entire park in a giant loop without ever seeing an incline. Taronga, conversely, is built on a cliffside. While Taronga’s views are unbeatable, the convenience of a flat zoo cannot be overstated for families with infants.

The Experience Style

Taronga feels like a legacy institution. It has history, massive heritage-listed trees, and that incredible ferry ride entrance. It feels "grand." Sydney Zoo feels "loft-style" and modern. It’s minimalist, with glass barriers instead of fences and a very streamlined aesthetic. It feels more like a modern art gallery for animals.

In terms of animal variety, both are excellent. Taronga has the edge on marine life (the seals are legendary), but Western Sydney has a fantastic reptile house and an integrated Aboriginal heritage trail that is truly well done. If you are staying in the CBD, Taronga is easier to get to. If you are in the suburbs or have a car, the parking at Western Sydney is free and plentiful—a stark contrast to Taronga's $20+ parking fee.

The Price Point

Usually, the Western Sydney alternative is slightly cheaper by about 10-15%. However, you lose the "Sydney experience" of the harbor. We recommend Western Sydney for locals who have "done" Taronga and want a low-stress day. For tourists, Taronga is still the king because the view of the giraffe next to the Harbor Bridge is a once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Which should you choose?

Choose Taronga if it's your first time in Sydney or you want the views. Choose Sydney Zoo (Western Sydney) if you have toddlers, a stroller, and want a totally flat, modern, and stress-free walking experience.
